1. The seven basicplots

Cujo was a lovely Sint-Bernard dog. Who was loved by everyone in town but especially by his ten year old owner named Brett Camber. One day when he was chasing a rabbit he got trapped in this underground cavity full of bats. He got bitten my one which was carrying a desease. Ever since then Cujo wasn't himself anymore. And while the familly didn't notice Cujo's brains deteriorated more and more. He slowly turned into a monster.

In the seccond fase everything seemed to go well according to the rebirth plot. It took some time before Cujo felt really ill. They couldn't see the threat coming.

The threat returns in his full force in the third fase. This is the fase when Cujo started acting strange. 'Cujo began to growl, deep in his throat. it was a rumbling, almost reflecting sound. He looked up at Gary, and there was something cold and speculative in the dog's eyes that gave Gary a chill. What's got in to you boy? Gary asked. He had never heard Cujo growl, not in al the years the Cambers had had him. To tell the truth he wouldn't have believed ole Cuje had a growl in him.'

This continues for a long time in fase for. Because eventually Cujo became a monster. He had bitten Gary Pervier and his own owner the father of Brett, Joe Camber. They both died because of the fever.

Because the writter is Stephen King not every story should have a happy ending. according to fase 5 the book should have a happy ending. But Donna's son Tad died because he was bitten by Cujo. In the end Donna pulled the trigger and killed the dog, which is a good thing ofcourse. But overall it's a dramatic ending. You may not recognize the fifth fase in Cujo but I think you can link that to the writer. Stephen King is well known of his spectacular endings.

    Cujo's change during the book.

    2. Characterization

    Cujo

Not like most books, the main character in this story isn’t a person but a dog. A dog named Cujo and owned by Joe Camber and his family. First, he was just a sweet dog that you can pet and cuddle with. But during story, this dog got bitten by a bat when he was chasing a rabbit in the forest. Sadly, it wasn’t just a bite that would hurt for a while and then go away, this was a bite from a rabid bat and the it gave Cujo the virus. So, during the story Cujo becomes murderous. There isn’t much more to tell about Cujo because it’s just a dog that tries to kill everybody.

    Joe Camber and Charity Camber

Joe Camber is the owner of the and married to Charity Camber and has a child with her named Bratt Camber. Joe is an abusive dad and that's why Charity wants to leave him with her son because she thinks Joe is a bad influence on Bratt.

Joe ones went to his neighbour's house to check up on is neighbour only to find out he had been killed by Cujo. After Joe found his neighbour dead, Cujo killed him too.

[Joe Camber has encountered Cujo in the garage. Cujo glares at him menacingly & growls]
    Joe Camber: "Cujo?"
[the dog snarls again, and approaches him menacingly]
Joe Camber: "Oh my God... you're rabid!"
[Cujo barks savagely and charges at Joe. He puts his arms up to defend himself as Cujo attacks]
Joe Camber: [yelling] "NO! NO! CUJO!"
[the dog jumps on him & knocks him down]

    Donna Trenton

Donna is the opposing force of Cujo and the protagonist of the story. She's married to Vic Trenton and has a child with him named Tad Trenton. She is kind off a heroic mother, putting her child's live before her own, even though it puts her life in danger. Donna is the person who got stuck in the car while Cujo was outside, waiting for the perfect change to kill them. It's kind off fascinating how round and dynamic this character is and how she can go from a sweet protective, caring mother to a heartless dog killer in a very short time. You could see that at that moment in the car, she was prepared to do anything to survive and not waiting for anything that would ruin that change.

Donna Trenton: [Tad starts hyperventalating] "Not now!"

"In matters of life and death, her mind told her implacably, the right time only comes around once - once and then it's gone"

    3. Setting

'Once upon a time not so long ago, a monster came to the small town Castle Rock, Maine.' The story takes place in Maine as many other Stephen King novels. It's the perfect setting for the book because it's a small town. You follow two different families. One of them has just moved to Maine.

The story takes place in the eighties. 'Expect that the monster never dies. Wherewolf, vampire, ghoul, unnameable creature from the wastes. The monster never dies. It came to Castle Rock again in the summer of 1980.' throughout the book it's difficult to know when everything takes place. So i couldn't add a timeline. The summer of 1980 is when this story happened. It was a bit difficult to find a good picture but this is Donna's car, the same car Stephen owned at that time. It's a Ford Pinto. This car is produced around the eighties.

    4. Point of view

The point of view of this story is very interesting. The writer (Stephen King) uses Third person but not just from one person. He tells his story through the eyes of more than one character, even from Cujo's point of view. Because the writer tells his story through many perspectives, he's able to give the story information from different angles. In this way the audience know all the information in the book but each character only knows one part, their one part.

For example when Joe was talking to Gary Pervier. It was a conversation between them and no one else (except the dog of course) was there. so only they knew how the conversation went. The rest of the people in the book didn't.

"Joe Camber: You better watch it, Pervier.

[Joe looks down and pats Cujo]

Joe Camber: I'll sic my dog on you.

Gary Pervier: That dog? You couldn't sic that dog on me if I was coming' at you with a straight razor in each hand!"

Than later you read about a small conversation Tad Trenton had with his father. And again you read information about a conversation no one else in the book knew about.

"Vic Trenton: There are no real monsters.

Tad Trenton: except for the one in my closet"

    5. Theme(s)

The major theme is about the lesson you can learn from your chosen novel. In this book the main lesson is that every choice you make, it has it's consequences. Cujo wouldn't have gone after the rabbit if the creature was way further than Cujo. He was chasing the rabbit and it didn't take long before he knew he was trapped. Because he had followed the rabbit he got trapped in an underground hole where he got bitten. 'one bite is all it takes.' The book is al about mistakes the characters made. It didn't take long till Donna, who had cheated on her husband, realised she had made a terrible mistake. Every little thing has it's consequences. If the rabbit would have run faster or earlier Cujo wouldn't have chased him. And this whole story wouldn't have happened.

The seccond mayor theme is that everything bad has it's own source. In the beginning of the book Cujo was a lovely dog all the bad things started to happen when he got bitten. In the end Charity gives Brett a puppy named Willie. It was a symbol to remind the readers Cujo was a good dog who had always treid to keep it's owners happy.

'There is a lot going on with is Bruno’s family in this story. His father is very strict and his mother dislikes the camps. That’s the reason why she wanted to head out to Berlin with her kids. Although that never happened because Bruno got his self-killed because of an innocent action. At the beginning of the story Bruno’s grandma died. This caused lots of problems in the family. Family is important in this book, that’s why Family blessing or curse is a minor theme in this book.'

There's a lot going on with Donna's family as well. She had an affair so the familly had some troubles. They've went to a lot together. For example Cujo attacking the car while Donna and her son Tad screamed for help. Both of the famillies have been through a lot and they both lost their son.

    6. Author

As we told before on this page of our website, the writer of our book is called Stephen Edwin King. Stephen King is born on September 21 1947 in Portland, Maine and is now 70 years old. He's an American author and usually writes horror and fantasy. Some of his books are even used to make movies. Stephen King has published 54 novels and 7 of them were under the pen name 'Richard Bachman'.

King has received 'Bram Stoker Awards', 'World Fantasy Awards' and 'British Fantasy Society Awards'.

In 2003, the 'National Book Foundation' awarded him the 'Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters'.

In 2015, King was awarded with a 'National Medal of Arts' from the 'United States National Endowment for the Arts' for his contributions to literature.

At age of 2 years old, Stephen's Father left the family when he said he was "going to buy a pack of cigarettes". This way Stephen's mother had to raise him and his brother alone.

The only website I used is Wikipedia for information about the author.

    7. Blogs

    Day 1:

Astrid and I just started to do something about the book report and we don't have much time left. We only have one week to read the whole book and make all the assignments and put it in the website. To be honest, I'm stressed. We definitely should've started way earlier.

    Day 2:

I've read about 70 pages and I'm not happy with the book we've chosen. It's terrifying and I don't like it. I should have read the back of the book before chosen it with Astrid because now I have to read a really scary book. The most annoying part is, I almost read my books right before I go to bed. So yesterday night when I read those 70 pages, I couldn't sleep because I was to frightened I would get nightmares. I guess I will have to change my reading schedule since I'm not going to read this book right before bedtime ever again.

    Day 4:

I'm almost done reading this horrifying book. There are only about 40 pages left and I'm going to read those tomorrow morning. I honestly don't really see any interesting parts about the book that would make me read it if it wasn't for this website. The only things I notice are the scary parts and sad situations everyone in the story is in. For example Joe's wife who wanted to leave her husband because he was abusive and would have a bad influence on their child. Then you have Gary Pervier, who was an alcoholic, also sad. And a lot of people died because of that stupid dog.

You can see I didn't quite 'like' this book. I actually hate it. I think there could have been more passion in it and more drama. I probably just don't like horror/thrillers. But what do you expect from a typical teenage girl like me? At least I did it for the book report. I guess that's a good thing.

    Day 6:

Thank God, I'm finally done reading Cujo. I'm going to make the assignment real quick and then I'm done :)

    - paula

    Day 1

I have no idea what to think or at least what to expect of this book. It started of a bit weird. I felt like I was reading a seccond or a third part of a serie because i didn't got introduced to the characters. I can't say a lot yet, because I've only read 20 pages but we'll see.

    Day 2

Okay never mind! This book is amazing, it's such a good thriller. When I started reading I couldn't stop. The book was just way too exciting. Firt of I had no idea what I was actually reading yesterday but I have only 70 pages left now! I've heard Paula doesn't like the book at all haha. At least I do, I like the fact it's scary otherwise it would be boring. This book contains a lot of drama. When I started reading I didn't like Joe at al, because he was just so mean to his wife,  but lucky me he died after a few pages. The book is fascinating because it's well written. Stephen King has really put his thoughts in this novel. I've heard he was on cocaine when he was writting it which explains a lot of this book's darkness.

    Day 5

I was a bit bussy because of school, so I'm lucky I've read so much a few days ago. I've finished the book today and I enjoyed it. I'm still a bit shook because of the ending though. I didn't want Tad to die. Well, now i've to write a lot for this website I hope we'll finish it on time. Next time we'll have to start earlier because it caused a lot of stress. I did enjoy the book but I would have enjoyed the book much more if i didnt had to read it in such a time rush. Blamings on me though.
