1. the seven basic plots
The hobbit is all about an unexpected journey. During this journey Bilbo, Gandalf and the dwarves have to slay many mystical creatures. This adventure is full of challenges and adventures so I think this book officially has officially has a ‘the quest’ plot.
'I am looking for someone to share in an adventure.'-Gandalf
Because they have to slay crazy creatures all the time so this book also has an ‘overcome the monster’ plot. The trolls as example. Bilbo tried pick-pocketing them but they noticed. The dwarves came for help but they were caught too. When the trolls wanted to make the dwarves ready to be eaten Gandalf came to rescue them.
2. Characterization
Bilbo Baggins
Bilbo Baggins is the hero of the story. He is a hobbit. Hobbits are short and look like human persons. Bilbo leads a quiet life in his comfortable hole at Bag End and, like most hobbits, is supposed to stay at home. But Bilbo possesses a great deal of untapped inner strength, and when the wizard Gandalf persuades Bilbo to join a group of dwarves on a quest to reclaim their gold from a marauding dragon, Bilbo ends up playing a crucial role as the company’s burglar. Bilbo’s adventures awaken his courage and initiative and prove his relentless ability to do what needs to be done.
Gandalf
A wise old wizard who always seems to know more than he reveals. Gandalf has a vast command of magic and tends to show up at just the moment he is needed most. Though he helps the dwarves in their quest (not least by making Bilbo go along with them), he does not seem to have any interest in their gold. He always has another purpose or plan in mind, but he rarely reveals his private thoughts.
Gollum
A strange, small, slimy creature who lives deep in the caves of Moria beneath the Misty Mountains. There, Gollum broods over his “precious,” a magic ring, until he accidentally loses it and Bilbo finds it. We never learn exactly what kind of creature he is. Apparently, his true shape has been too deformed by years of living in darkness to be recognizable.
Thorin Oakenshield
A dwarf who leads his fellow dwarves on a trip to the Lonely Mountain to reclaim their treasure from Smaug. Smaug’s bounty is Thorin’s inheritance, as it belonged to Thror, Thorin’s grandfather, the great King under the Mountain. Thorin is a proud, purposeful, and sturdy warrior, if a bit stubborn at times. As the novel progresses, his inability to formulate successful plans, his greed, and his reliance on Bilbo to save him at every turn make Thorin a somewhat unappealing figure, but he is partly redeemed by the remorse he shows before he dies.
3. setting
The story happened 7000 years ago. It's a medieval themed fairy tale. I think it is a medieval story because of the old buildings and the castles, you can place them in the middle ages. The clothing also really reminds me off the middle ages. At the other hand you can't place the wizards, trolls, dwarves, and last but not least the hobbits in a medieval theme. So it’s very difficult to decide in which timetable I should place this story.
4. Point of view
The novel is written in the third person, mostly from Bilbo’s point of view. You can see that for example in the sentence: “ “Good Morning!” said Bilbo, and he meant it.” The person who wrote the book didn’t just write Bibo’s feelings, he also gave his own opinion on them. The writer of this story is a excellent story-teller. The story is told kind off childish. Sometimes the writer explains particular situations in a childish way but it is actually quite understandable. I think it can be annoying sometimes.
5. Themes
Facing unexpectable situations all the time
Bilbo overcomes a lot of unexpectable things. He was the chosen one to experience this amazing journey. Instead of being in a safe area called the shire he travels through the whole land. He sees the most magnificant creatures and the most beautiful forrests. But he also has to face the enemy, which can be scarry.
Friendship and love
This story is about strong connections between amazing people. You must trust each other to go on such a big adventure like this. The Hobbit and the dwarves became true friends they could relay on each other. You can find love the book as well. There is a relationship between Tauriel and Kili in the films but she doesn't have a character in the books.
Good versus bad
This book has a lot of enemies and good guys. The dwarves gandalf and Bilbo are the good guys ofcourse and characters as Smaug (the dragon who destroyed lake-town) and Gollum (who has kept the ring for many years but has lost the ring because of bilbo) and Azog (the leader of the orcs). It's a battlefield between them which makes this book interesting.
